What is the Care Quality Commission (CQC)?

The Care Quality Commission, or CQC, is an independent organisation that oversees and regulates health and social care services in England. Since it was set up in 2009, the CQC’s main role has been to ensure that care providers offer services that are safe, effective, compassionate, and of a consistently high standard. They encourage services to keep improving while making sure that people who use those services are protected.

Why is CQC regulation important?

For anyone looking for care, the CQC offers reassurance that services meet clear quality and safety standards. Their regular inspections and reports help people make informed choices about where to get care. For providers, being regulated by the CQC means they are accountable and must maintain good standards, which helps build trust with their clients and the public.

How does the CQC regulate services?

The CQC monitors a wide range of health and social care services — from hospitals and GP surgeries to care homes, mental health support, and community clinics. Before a service can operate legally, it must register with the CQC.

During inspections, the CQC focuses on five main areas:

  • Is the service safe?

  • Is it effective?

  • Is it caring?

  • Is it responsive to people’s needs?

  • Is it well-led?

Based on these assessments, services are rated from ‘Outstanding’ to ‘Inadequate,’ helping people understand the quality of care they can expect.

Why does Bossa Health's CQC registration matter?

Having CQC registration is more than just a legal requirement — it is a clear mark of quality and trust. It shows that we are fully committed to delivering care that meets the highest standards for safety, effectiveness, and compassion.
